Week 8 Term 1 Memo
Well here we go ladies and gentlemen, we are off and running again into a new week with more nuts and bolts to attend to.
Spelling:
This week we look at ‘ei’ or ‘eigh’ to make the ‘ai’ sound. This includes cracking words like inveigle. In a sentence this word may appear like this...
’We cannot inveigle this student to do their work.’
So what does this word actually mean?
Kitchen Garden:
Due to a special exploration lesson this week to kick start our future food event, we will be having a theory based lesson for SAKG and therefore will not need the support of our wonderful cooking volunteers.
The following week however will see our ovens lit and our range hoods hot and ready again for some cooking of cultural cuisines.
Extravaganza:
A big thank you to all the student and parent volunteers that helped out on Saturday and made the event a success. It was wonderful to see so many out and about. Mrs Eckermann was an apology for the day due to a tennis grand final. While providing a quality individual performance that had her high up in the MVP voting, sadly her team went down.

Whole School Info…
Corona Virus – Understandably parents have many questions at this time. So do we and it’s very complex as the landscape is constantly changing and evolving. But there are some very simple messages that need to be reiterated and followed:
- If you or your child/ren are sick and show any of the symptoms of Corona Virus you must stay away from school.
- The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other colds and flus and include:
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Difficulty breathing
- Fever
- While coronavirus is of concern, it is important to remember that most people displaying these symptoms are likely suffering with a cold or other respiratory illness – not coronavirus.
- The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other colds and flus and include:
- Practising good hand washing and sneeze/cough hygiene and keeping your distance from others when you are sick is the best defence against most viruses. Importantly:
- Washing hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet.
- Covering cough and sneeze.
- Washing hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet.
We are reiterating this message at school.
- We will be following the advice given to us by the relevant authorities and do our very best to keep up with the instructions as they come. It’s important to understand that the messaging/dialogue that people will hear in the media may not be the same as the advice that is directly sent to us via SA Health, DECD, AISSA and LESNW.
- Events / Excursions etc – like most schools we have a number of events coming up. It’s likely that many of these events will not be able to go ahead and some of these decisions will be made for us, not by us. We will give as much warning as we can if events are going to be cancelled / postponed. Normal school operations will continue and we will make ‘case by case’ decisions on co-curricular events as they draw near.
- We are working on some plans to support families/children who need to stay away from school via an online platform. This will take a little while to develop, but we will keep families informed as things develop.
- Please feel free to contact Daryl if you have any matters you wish to discuss.
Immanuel Sports Day - a decision regarding sports day will be made by our staff exec tonight and communicated tomorrow.
“Extravaganza” on Saturday was a great family fun day at Immanuel
We had so many families attend. Thanks to all those who attended and helped out.
Harmony Day Wednesday 18 March – students can wear a splash of orange (eg coloured t-shirt with sports shorts, ribbons, socks, scarfs). Orders for Cup Cakes for recess have now closed.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is underway for this year. All classes received forms for recording books read last week.
- Students in Years F-3 - all books read in class will count toward their Premier’s Reading Challenge.
- Students in Years 4-6 - will keep track of their own reading.
- Students will need to read 12 books during the challenge period, including eight from the Reading Challenge list.
- Students may include books they have read earlier this year, prior to receiving their forms.
- Reading for the Challenge finishes on 4 September 2020.
Staff Carpark and Bus Parking area
- Up to now we have allowed parents to use the staff carpark for drop off and pick up. However in recent times we have had (what we consider to be) ‘near misses’ as we have two busses that operate out of that area every morning and afternoon. To ensure safety of students boarding on and off the bus, as well as the safety of students coming to and from school, we no longer can allow parents to have access to this area in the morning drop off or afternoon pick up times. Thanks for your understanding.
Relay for Life
- Please stay tuned regarding Gawler’s Cancer Council’s Relay for Life Event on Saturday the 28th March here in Gawler.
Safety Incident Form
- If you experience an injury or near miss, sight a hazard or observation it is your duty to report it. This can be done via a form now on our website at this link.
iGOSH
- The April School Vacation Care program will be sent home to families on Weds 18 March. Bookings will open online that day too at 5pm and will close Thursday 2 April.
- Each child at iGOSH has a My iGOSH Life Book. This book is for the children to draw, write and add things they make, into a scrap book that will then be something special they take from iGOSH when they finish here. These scrap books will also have “Observations” that staff conduct on your children for you to read and reflect on. These are a great way to share with families the things your child does and how we plan activities based on your child’s needs and interests. On the sign in desk each week, is a list of children that have observations for parents to read and comment on. So if your child’s name is on the list, please find their scrap book in the bottom draw near the desk, have a read, share it with your child and write a comment. We are excited to share these with you and thank you for your support.
Kytons Bakery Fundraiser, order some lamingtons or Hot Cross Buns.
- All order forms and payments are due back by Thursday 26 March, for delivery of stock Friday 3/4/20. Thanks Carers Group
